Kate's Camp for Kids

Kate's Camp for Kids is a comprehensive summer arts day program that focuses on nurturing children's creative potential through the arts! This state-licensed camp brings together professional teaching artists from throughout the region to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. Designed for boys and girls ages 5 to 10 years old, Kate's Camp is filled with music, dance, art, and theater, and each session culminates in a performance for family and friends! A diverse range of activities is offered on a rotating basis to ensure a fresh experience for even the most frequent camper.

Sessions focus on music, theater, visual art and dance education. Campers will also enjoy a professional show mid-week each session, put on by dramatic and musical entertainers! Artistic activities at Kate's Camp for Kids promote self-esteem and confidence building, as well as just plain old fun pretending!

Kate's Camp for Kids offers five one-week sessions from July 6 to August 7, 2020, and each session runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm each day except on Friday, the performance is at 1pm and dismissal immediately follows the show. The cost is $295 per session and there is a 10% discount on additional registrations within the same immediate family.

Dates and themes of each session:

Session 1 - July 6-10: So You Wanna Be a Pirate? This DIY show will give campers a chance to write their own sea-faring adventure and the songs to tell the tale! Learn to walk, talk, dance and sing like a pirate, then put on your original show on the stage of the Kate!

Session 2 - July 13-17: Stone Soup Based on the famous fable, Stone Soup. When a group of weary travelers creates a delicious meal from some unexpected ingredients, the gloomy citizens of Old Town ask, “Who ever heard of soup from a stone?” Campers learn that “the greatest gift is to share” with this character-building mini-musical.

Session 3 - July 20-24: Pajama Party! It’s time for bed – time to pick up our toys, take a bath time, brush our teeth and put our PJs on to end the day. But wait! What’s that noise I hear under my bed? Where’s my teddy bear? See how bedtime can really be a blast in this creative and cozy musical play.

Session 4 - July 27-31: Fairy Tale Mashup What if the Three Bears met Little Red Riding Hood as she was coming home from Rapunzel’s castle? Maybe Cinderella was a great soccer player and lost her cleat on the way home from the tournament? Or maybe Snow White’s friends were seven rock stars? Come to camp for this DIY week and rewrite a favorite story and the songs to go with it!

Session 5 - August 3-7: SWAMPED! The swamp is all a-buzz with party preparations galore! Naturally, the turtles are running late, and Bully the Frog is being a bully. The frogs have learned a new dance they want to share. The tadpoles are growing appendages (yikes!) and the dragonfly larvae need encouragement to spread their wings and fly. Lessons of friendship, tolerance, courage to face the future, and more, abound!
