Website:
  • Hardcover, 40 pages.
  • Ages 4-8

Farmer McPhee tends to his orchard of yellow lemons by the sea. He rhymes and riddles expressing his infatuation with lemons until the day he finds one not so yellow.

"Who'd squeeze this red thing in their afternoon tea?
Who'd buy a red lemon from Farmer McPhee?"

Farmer McPhee, astonished at the sight of a red lemon, forbid the fruit and threw it to an island far, far away. Little did he know, two hundred years into the future, the red lemon sprouts into its very own island. Red Lemon Island is a flourishing, futuristic spot for tourists to feed on super sweet red treats. Red lemonade, cakes, and breads for everyone! These red lemons were in fact six times as sweet as the yellow ones.

The plot of The Red Lemon sends the message that although something or someone may be different, different is not always bad. Different is unique and in this case, different is a hit!

Along with the colorful humor, the unique styles of the illustrations are amusing page after page. The main character and objects are comprised of common shapes, mostly circles. The very, round Farmer McPhee on the story's cover is the prime example. Author and illustrator, Bob Staake, combines a little creative fun to the writing as well. A variety of words are printed in colored font, whether they are red or yellow, teaching the young readers to connect the sight of the color to the correct spelling.
