As one of the leading agricultural fairs, the charm and heart of Bridgewater is contagious and over 30,000 people attend in 3 days. The Bridgewater Fair not only is a fundraiser for the Bridgewater volunteer fire department, but actually is the main source of support for the Fire Department and EMS, who are independently funded. The Bridgewater Fire Department was started in 1928 as an independent corporation in town, and since then has not used town taxes to purchase equipment or fund the volunteer company and is not eligible for State or Federal grants. That is why the success of the Bridgewater Fair is so important each year.
It is a legacy amongst families, and a culture of the town whether you started young or moved in recently. The Fair Fever becomes a natural energy in Bridgewater, starting as early as its first year in 1952 when it started as a local small carnival! Chief James Sullivan began the charge, 23 chiefs in between, and now Eric Gsell resides as Chief of the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department and holds a passion for this Fair that can’t be explained.
Fire Chief Eric Gsell, originally from New Orleans who moved to Bridgewater (his wife’s hometown) 12 years ago, and says "64th year of the fair and I am proud to be part of that tradition. I love the fair as it brings everyone from town together. We have close to 1,000 volunteers that make it happen. The Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department that runs the fair is composed of the greatest people in town and I am honored to be their Chief. We work all year to put on the fair as it is our main source of revenue.”
Get excited as this fair only happens once a year, and you can’t see these activities and displays all in one place anywhere else.
